Additional Facts:
* At 11, after asking for a
guitar for Christmas, his father bought him one with one condition: proper
lessons! So Steve studied classical guitar for a couple years until he heard
Jimmy Page; it was rock music from there.
*Steve's first performance was
July 7, 1972 at a folk dance festival at the City School, Stradbroke Road, in
Sheffield.
*Steve's first band was Electric Chicken
* As a
requirement for GECT, Steve had to attend classes at Stannington College where
he met Pete Willis in the library. He would run into Pete, along with Joe
Elliott, again a few days later at a Judas Priest concert.
*Steve
eventually took Pete up on his rehearsal offers and on January 29, 1978 he
officially auditioned for Def Leppard with Lynard Skynard's Free Bird from the
beginning to end including the lengthy end solo. He was immediately hired.
*Steve struggled with alcoholism basically from the start, but it
started to become evident during Hysteria after he drank himself into a coma.
The last year of his life was the worst. He was put on a 6 month leave to get
himself together, but before the time elapsed he passed away alone in his sleep
at home. The cause was an overdose of alcohol, pain killers (for three broken
ribs), and anti-depressants.
