So when was the first time he fell heart-over-head in love, and
lust?
"With my first girlfriend, Denise Dakin, around the same time we really got
the band going," he says. "And the band started because between the ages of 16
and 18 you're too old for the youth club and you can't get into the pub so
you're left kickin' cans around the street. So we put a band together and, in
1979, recorded our debut EP and then Denise and I moved to London....And life in
London was fantastic. The rent was 138 quid a month, paid for by Denise's dole
money. And everytime the dole inspector came around I had to take my stuff out
of her room and hide it! We were all living in one house and going to the
Hammersmith Odeon every night to see gigs. It was a great time in my life."
And life remained great for Joe and Denise who were "blissfully happy" as Def
Leppard really did break through with albums like Pyromania.
However, by 1989 Joe Elliott was, as he says, with Karla, whom he'd met five
years earlier....But he was also beset by guilt because at the time, he was
still "technically" living with Denise.
"And I told Karla, 'I can't do this,' and we fought about
that," he recalls. "But I realised I'd broken Denise's heart and I spent months
in agonising grief over that. But at the end of the day you are selfish in those
situations."

Already, the promise of domesticity
seems to be closing in upon Elliott, whose girlfriend Denise Dakin - a Sheffield lass
working stateside as a nanny - has been his constant companion during Leppard's Northeastern swings.
